I ordered “I’m Not a Girl” by Lyons and Verdi (2020) and read it. It’s in our genre. I really enjoyed it. It didn’t reinforce stereotypes, which I think is something that is important in these books. I’m going to get from the library the following books:
- Calvin
- My Rainbow
- 47,000 Beads
- They Call Me Mix
- Melissa
- Too Bright to See
- Riding Freedom
- My Princess Boy
- One of a Kind, Like Me
- I am Jazz
I want to read each of these and see how our content compliments what is already in the market
My good friend, who is an author and also a journalist, has told me that reaching out to authors in this genre is a good step. She said that some folks have tables or host signings at Book Fairs and can do those together. I would love to collaborate with other authors.
Finally, my goal, as I’ve said prior, is to have the book done and published at year’s end. I’m going to go to our conference that we have for our profession and attend presentations and see posters of research for supporting trans kids at that conference. I’ll bring signed copies of the book there too.
If you’re an adult reading a children’s book, what is your purpose with it? What do you like best in a picture book?
